Short answer: Aadhaar Virtual ID, or VID, is a replaceable identifier you can use instead of the Aadhaar number for supported authentication or e-KYC. Decide whether you need to generate a token, retrieve the current token or replace it. These choices have different consequences. Start from UIDAI, keep control of your registered phone and read the result before continuing with the intended service.

This guide is for Aadhaar holders managing their own VID. It does not change personal details, recover a lost enrolment record, determine benefit eligibility or promise that every service screen supports the same process. We inspected public official guidance; we did not submit a person’s Aadhaar details, request an OTP or complete a private authentication.
What an Aadhaar Virtual ID does
UIDAI’s resident handbook describes VID as a 16-digit token for Aadhaar, offered for people who do not wish to share the Aadhaar number during Aadhaar-based authentication. It lists official website, mobile and SMS channels for obtaining it. A VID is an identifier for an authentication process, not a new Aadhaar enrolment or a correction to the original identity record.
Think first about the service you want to complete. Are you being asked to authenticate, present a document or correct an existing record? Those tasks are easy to mix up when every screen contains Aadhaar-related wording. Identify the task before deciding that obtaining another identifier is the next useful step.
For a genuine authentication request, ask what the request is for and read the service’s instructions. Do not treat a request to supply an identifier as permission for unrelated access to your phone, documents or accounts. A smaller amount of disclosed information does not remove the need to understand the purpose of the transaction.
Choose generation, retrieval or replacement deliberately
The current UIDAI authentication FAQ says only one VID is valid for an Aadhaar number at a time. Retrieval returns the active VID; generating a replacement deactivates the previous token. The FAQ describes a minimum regeneration interval, currently one calendar day or after midnight, and no fixed expiry while a replacement has not been generated. Follow the live service if it gives a more specific eligibility message.
Write down the outcome you need in ordinary words before opening the screen. “I need the token I already have” is different from “I want a new token instead of the old one”. That small decision prevents accidental replacement when you only needed to find a lost message.
| Your immediate question | Action to examine |
|---|---|
| I have not obtained a VID for this task | Read the official generation instructions. |
| I cannot find the existing token | Check the retrieval option before deciding to replace it. |
| I deliberately want to stop using the previous token | Read replacement and regeneration instructions. |
| I have lost my Aadhaar or enrolment details | Use the separate UID/EID recovery process. |
Keep the identifier’s purpose distinct from the document’s purpose. Our lost UID or EID recovery guide covers finding the original reference. Do not select a VID action solely because the recovery task also uses a registered phone.
Prepare the phone and the task before entering details
Use a private device you control and open UIDAI’s website yourself. If another person sent a service link, find the equivalent service through UIDAI instead of assuming the message is reliable. Read the actual domain and the page heading before entering an identifier, and stop if the requested information has no clear connection to your task.
Keep the registered mobile available for the chosen official route. If you are helping a relative, explain which action they are about to take. Let them retain control of the phone and authentication messages. You can read instructions together without collecting or saving their identifier in your own notes.
On a shared computer, first decide whether it is suitable for the task at all. Avoid downloading identity files merely to make a helper’s work easier. If assistance is necessary, agree where any temporary copy will be stored and remove it through the normal device process when it is no longer needed.
There is no need to send CheckMatter a token, Aadhaar number or screenshot to use this guide. A useful support question describes the chosen action and the visible problem. It should not publish an entire identity record just to show that a button was unavailable.
Use the current official website or SMS instructions
Start from myAadhaar or the service linked by UIDAI. Read the generation and retrieval labels carefully, supply only the fields requested by that official route and review the confirmation. Interface sequences can change, so this guide does not invent a fixed screen-by-screen flow for an authenticated account we have not accessed.
For SMS, UIDAI gives GVID followed by a space and the last four Aadhaar digits for generation, or RVID followed by a space and the last four digits for retrieval, sent to 1947 from the registered number. Read the official FAQ before sending. Do not send the full identifier to a number supplied by an unknown caller.
After using an official route, distinguish a request acknowledgement from the token or a successful final result. Read the message rather than relying on the fact that the phone displayed a notification. If the response is an error, note the action you attempted and its wording without sharing the private contents publicly.
Do not repeatedly press different options in the hope that one will work. If you began with retrieval, finish understanding that result before trying generation. Keeping one action and one observed outcome together makes a later enquiry much clearer than a sequence of unlabelled attempts.
Treat a replacement as a change to your working identifier
Before deliberately requesting a new token, consider where you are about to use it. If an authentication session is already in progress, read that service’s instructions and avoid mixing a newly obtained identifier with a stale entry saved elsewhere. We do not assume that every provider refreshes an unfinished form automatically.
Once you receive a replacement result, keep the current token distinguishable from an old saved message. Avoid copying several similar identifiers into an unlabelled note and later choosing whichever appears first. If your device stores drafts or copied text, check the value you actually paste into the intended official service.
For record-keeping, a note such as “retrieved current VID” or “requested replacement” is often sufficient. It need not repeat the token itself. Record the purpose and approximate time privately if that helps you remember what you did. A useful personal record documents the action without creating extra copies of sensitive information.
Consent and locks remain separate checks
UIDAI states that VID-based authentication still needs the holder’s consent and that an agency should explain its purpose. The same current FAQ says Aadhaar lock blocks authentication using UID, VID or UID token until unlocked. A VID is not a way around that lock. This is separate from the narrower biometric-lock control.
Do not change a security setting simply because someone says that a “new code” is required. Identify the setting and its effect through UIDAI first. If the transaction can wait while you understand the request, take that time. Pressure to act immediately is not an explanation of why a specific security action is necessary.
If your concern is an unexplained past authentication rather than obtaining an identifier, our authentication-history guide covers reading those records. Obtaining a VID does not investigate a previous event or establish who initiated it.
Investigate failure without guessing the cause
First separate an unavailable page, a rejected request and a completed request whose result you cannot find. These require different questions. Record whether you reached the relevant service, which action you selected and what response appeared. Avoid calling every unsuccessful attempt an identity mismatch or a compromised account.
Check the registered-phone context before asking someone else to intervene. A phone you currently use may not be the number connected to the service you are trying to access. Use UIDAI’s current mobile-update or support instructions if the registered number needs attention. This article does not replace those instructions or guarantee remote recovery.
If a provider rejects a token during the later transaction, ask whether it accepts VID for that particular process and whether the error concerns input, authentication or service availability. Do not give an operator extra documents or a remote-control session merely because the first attempt failed.
When seeking help, make a short, factual request: the task, the action, the non-sensitive error description and the clarification needed. Supply private details only through a verified official channel when required. For wider document questions, use our government and public-service explainers.
Example: finding a token without an unintended replacement
Imagine an Aadhaar holder preparing for a service that supports VID. They remember obtaining a token but cannot locate the message. Their first question is therefore retrieval, rather than a general wish to “get a number”. They open the official instructions and choose the action that matches that question.
After reading the result, they check the identifier they will enter into the intended service and the purpose of the authentication. If the service reports a lock or another problem, they investigate that message separately. They do not conclude that another token automatically resolves every obstacle or that possession of the token grants access without consent.
This example deliberately uses no real Aadhaar digits or sample identity record. Its purpose is to show an order of decisions: define the task, choose the matching action, read the outcome and then continue with the actual service. It is not a demonstration of an authenticated account or a guarantee about a provider’s interface.
Frequently asked questions
Does this article announce a compulsory VID deadline?
No. It explains an existing service choice. Check the instructions of the particular service you intend to use rather than treating the article’s verification date as a deadline.
Should I post my result in a help group?
Describe the problem without exposing the token, Aadhaar number or complete message. Use the official support route for information that genuinely requires private account context.
Can a helper choose the security action for me?
Understand the requested action yourself. Assistance with reading instructions should not become uncontrolled access to your identity records or phone.
Final Aadhaar Virtual ID checklist
Define whether you need generation, retrieval or replacement; start from UIDAI; retain control of the registered phone; review the result; and check the purpose and status of the intended authentication. Use Aadhaar Virtual ID as a deliberate identifier choice while keeping record recovery, consent and security controls as separate decisions.
