Short answer: Read an NPS transaction statement by matching the subscriber, sector, Tier and statement period first. Then reconcile contribution records with scheme-wise transactions, units and the NAV used for valuation. A salary deduction, a contribution credited to the account and today’s investment value answer different questions; do not expect those figures to be identical.

This guide is for Indian NPS subscribers reviewing an existing statement, with examples of section meanings from Protean CRA’s official documentation. It does not recommend a pension fund, change an investment preference or calculate a tax deduction. No private account, payment or pension record was accessed. Use your own CRA’s current statement notes and service instructions for account-specific action.
NPS transaction statement: start with coverage
Protean’s statement-reading explainer identifies subscriber details, an investment summary, investment details, contributions or redemptions, transactions and notes. Read the identifying block and period before interpreting the totals. A correct-looking name on a file does not establish that you have selected the intended Tier or financial year.
Keep the account identifier private while matching it to your own records. Note whether the statement concerns a government, corporate or all-citizen arrangement and which CRA supplied it. Protean’s notes directory provides separate sector and Tier links. Do not automatically apply an APY, NPS Lite or another Tier’s description to the statement in front of you.
For access, start from your CRA’s verified website rather than an old search advertisement or forwarded login link. Protean has published a domain-migration notice distinguishing its informational website from transactional websites. Follow its current official navigation. This guide does not test a sign-in flow or ask you to share credentials.
Save the statement as received, with the generation date and period visible. If you download another copy later, retain both with clear filenames. An updated valuation can otherwise be mistaken for a correction to an earlier contribution record. Establish what changed before deciding why it changed.
Give each section a separate job
| Section or record | Useful question | Conclusion to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Subscriber details | Is this the intended account and reporting period? | Every statement with my name covers the same Tier |
| Investment summary | What totals and valuation date are presented? | The current value must equal all money ever deducted from salary |
| Contribution/redemption details | Which processed events fall in the selected period? | Every external payment reference already proves a unit credit |
| Transaction details | Which schemes received or lost units, and on what record dates? | A unit change can only mean a fresh contribution |
| Notes and explanations | How does this statement define its fields? | A familiar label always has the meaning I assume |
Use the summary as an overview and the detailed rows to investigate a specific event. Starting from an unexplained difference in the final total can conceal several separate questions. Identify whether you are checking a missing contribution, a unit adjustment, a valuation difference or a description you do not understand.
Reconcile contributions using the right evidence
For payroll-linked contributions, place the relevant salary record beside the NPS statement. Identify the contribution period and any separate subscriber and employer amounts shown. Do not treat the payslip deduction alone as proof that the corresponding investment transaction has completed in the CRA record.
Protean’s contribution FAQ describes contribution information and receipt of funds as parts of the processing sequence. This explains why an external debit and a unit allotment should be checked separately. This article quotes no universal credit time, daily cut-off or promise that a particular payment has reached its destination.
Build a reconciliation entry from the real documents: deduction or payment date; contribution period; amount; reference available; corresponding statement row; and unresolved difference. Mark a missing match as “not yet matched” rather than “lost” or “fraudulent”. Ask the responsible service what the available reference establishes.
For an arrears entry, read the narration and compare it with the period your office says it covers. Protean’s non-government statement notes explain that corporate arrears descriptions originate from the office’s uploaded information. Where the wording is unclear, ask the relevant office for the underlying explanation instead of assigning your own month to the amount.
If two amounts appear similar, match the reference and period before treating one as a duplicate. Regular contributions and an adjustment can have similar-looking amounts while representing different events. The aim is to map records accurately, not to force every external entry into a one-to-one pattern the documents do not support.
Read scheme, units and NAV together
The official government-sector notes describe scheme-wise units allotted for processed contributions and units debited for events including redemption and rectification. They also distinguish the transaction posting date from the date used for NAV allotment. Do not compare two date columns as though they necessarily describe the same step.
For a row you are checking, identify the pension fund and scheme exactly as displayed. Then read the amount, NAV and units in that row together. A current NAV taken from a different date is not a substitute for the transaction NAV on an earlier allotment. Keep valuation and transaction questions separate.
For a simple valuation check, the official notes describe current scheme value as current NAV multiplied by the scheme’s units. Use the matching scheme and relevant NAV category. Small display-rounding differences should be documented before being treated as a substantive missing amount. Ask the CRA to explain the exact calculation if the presentation remains unclear.
PFRDA’s 24 March 2026 public notice introduced a multiple-NAV framework within a scheme from 1 April 2026 to reflect differentiated charges. This is an existing change, not November news. Do not assume that another subscriber’s NAV is the right comparator without matching the applicable category and date.
Separate investment value, cost and return measures
The official notes distinguish contributions, value of holdings and notional gains or losses. A statement total can move with valuation even when no fresh contribution is added. Read the heading and date before describing a lower value as an uncredited payroll amount or a higher value as a guaranteed pension benefit.
Protean’s Tier II notes also discuss units used for charges and distinguish the cost associated with units from the proceeds of a withdrawal. Apply the explanation for your actual account. A cost figure, an amount redeemed and current holdings are not automatically interchangeable.
Where a return is labelled XIRR, treat it as the statement’s defined performance measure. Do not compare it with a simple change between two balances unless the cash flows and calculation method have also been matched. This guide makes no personalised return calculation and does not forecast a future pension.
Inspect the current charge information through the relevant official service if a debit or deduction needs explanation. No fee amount, tax percentage or universal charge frequency is prescribed here. An old table can be unsuitable for the date, sector or account being reviewed, especially where charges affect NAV or units in different ways.
Ask one answerable question about a discrepancy
Separate a payroll enquiry from a statement-field enquiry. The office handling a contribution may need to explain an uploaded amount or period; the CRA may need to explain a transaction row or calculation. Start with the organisation responsible for the record you cannot reconcile, using the current official support route.
The Protean contact page provides current assistance information. Verify it from the official site before sending an enquiry. Do not send a complete statement to an unsolicited caller or disclose an OTP merely to obtain an explanation of a balance.
A focused enquiry can say: “I am reviewing the statement for [period and Tier]. My record shows [specific contribution or reference]. The statement row dated [date] shows [exact field]. Please explain [one difference] and identify any document needed for reconciliation.” This is an editorial writing aid, not an official form or an instruction to post private details publicly.
Keep the acknowledgement and reply with the same review entry. A support ticket confirms an enquiry exists; it does not replace the contribution reference. After a correction is reported, check the new statement against the original and retain both. Record whether the amount, description, date or units actually changed.
A review exercise without invented market numbers
Take the six section headings in Protean’s statement explainer and assign one question to each. For one real contribution in a statement you are authorised to inspect, locate its period, processed amount and related units. Where information is unavailable, write the missing question rather than filling the gap with a guessed NAV or return.
Our consolidated account statement guide explains a different combined investment record. Do not assume that its coverage or labels replace the NPS CRA statement. Likewise, EPF, EPS and UAN concern separate EPFO records; an NPS contribution should be reconciled through its own account and service.
Dates and what this review does not change
No new contribution deadline, tax entitlement or processing promise is announced here. Check the instructions accompanying your statement and raise discrepancies promptly through the relevant official route. Statement review does not itself authorise a scheme switch, withdrawal or additional investment. Those decisions require separate current information.
Frequently asked questions
Must the current value equal every contribution ever paid?
No. Identify the statement’s coverage, investment valuation and processed events before comparing totals.
Can I check an old allotment with today’s NAV?
Use the NAV associated with the relevant transaction for that question. Current valuation is a separate check.
Does this guide tell me which fund to choose?
No. It explains record reconciliation, not suitability or a personal investment instruction.
Final NPS transaction statement checklist
Confirm account, sector, Tier and period; match contributions to processed records; read schemes, dates, units and NAV together; and ask a precise question where records differ. A useful NPS transaction statement review explains the evidence without inventing a return, missing payment or deadline.
