Short answer: Download Zerodha Tax P&L for the correct financial year and quarter range, then check whether the report has the information needed to explain your transactions. A generated capital-gains report is a starting record, not a certificate that every acquisition cost, transfer or tax classification is correct. Resolve missing data and identify exceptions before using its figures in a tax return.

This guide is for Zerodha users reviewing their own report before discussing tax filing with an adviser. Zerodha’s documentation is used only for its own product features and limitations; Income Tax Department guidance supplies the AIS context. We do not prescribe tax rates, select an income head, calculate liability or recommend an investment.
Download Zerodha Tax P&L for the intended period
Zerodha’s official download instructions direct web users to Console, Reports and Tax P&L, followed by financial-year and quarter-range selection. The Kite app route starts under the User ID. Review the selected range before downloading the report; a partial-year export is not the same evidence set as a full-year export.
Begin with the question your review must answer. Are you collecting records for a completed year, checking a particular sale or preparing an interim estimate? Write the intended period beside the report filename. That makes it easier to notice when an otherwise valid file covers only part of the activity you are investigating.
Use your own legitimate account route. Do not enter credentials into a “tax report download” link sent by an unknown person. If an adviser is helping, agree how to share the completed export rather than handing over an unrestricted login or a live authentication code simply to obtain a document.
Retain the original download and note its retrieval date. If you need a working spreadsheet, make a distinguishable copy. A later regenerated report may incorporate corrected information, so preserving versions helps explain why a figure changed without silently replacing the evidence used in an earlier discussion.
Check which accounts and activities the report covers
List the accounts and investment records relevant to your review before totalling anything. If you have used another broker, moved holdings or hold assets outside this account, identify those records separately. One platform’s export should not be treated as a complete picture of your finances solely because its filename contains “tax”.
Look at the report’s own segment headings and period labels. Keep distinct categories visible in your worksheet rather than combining all positive figures into a single “capital gains” number. A product label is not a personalised legal conclusion about how each transaction should be taxed in your circumstances.
Separate a holdings question from a realised-transaction question. Our consolidated account statement guide explains another kind of investment record. Do not compare a holdings valuation directly with a profit figure and assume the difference indicates an error; first establish what each amount measures.
| Review area | Evidence to gather | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Account and period list | Which activity is outside this export? |
| Acquisition | Original purchase and transfer records | What supports the date and cost? |
| Exceptions | Relevant event or adjustment record | Does the reported treatment need review? |
| Charges | Report labels and supporting statements | Am I comparing equivalent totals? |
| Final use | Dated export and review notes | Which figures remain unresolved? |
Trace missing acquisition details to the original record
Zerodha’s tax-report limitations guide says transferred-in shares may lack purchase price and date because the acquisition occurred outside the platform. It also describes special reporting issues for transferred-out holdings and gifts. Those are reasons to inspect the evidence, not instructions to invent a purchase cost.
For an affected holding, gather the original purchase record and the transfer record. Identify the security consistently, using the available identifier and description. A renamed company or an abbreviated trading symbol can make two records look unrelated. Note what establishes that they concern the same holding before comparing dates and quantities.
Distinguish a known acquisition value from a value used merely to display the transfer on a platform. Write down the source of any figure you propose to use. If the source cannot be identified, keep the entry unresolved rather than replacing a blank with zero or with the current market price to make the sheet look complete.
A movement between accounts and a purchase through the destination platform are different events in your record history. Build a short sequence: original acquisition, later movement and eventual disposal if relevant. This is an evidence-organising method; it does not determine tax treatment for gifts, inheritance or every kind of transfer.
If a correction is needed, ask the platform what information its reporting process requires. Keep any platform response with your working note. Changing a field for reporting purposes and deciding the tax basis are related but separate responsibilities. An adviser may need to examine the source documents before either step is treated as final.
Create an exception list before relying on the summary
The same Zerodha guide flags areas including corporate-action adjustments to fair market values, cancelled dividends, asset classifications and buyback reporting. We do not reproduce its tax-rate examples as universal rules. Instead, use the guide to identify entries that need current legal and factual review for the actual transaction period.
Start with events you know occurred in the account. Did you move securities, receive a gift, encounter a corporate action or see a dividend later cancelled? Match each event to supporting documents. Do not mark every row as problematic just because a long limitations page exists; isolate the cases relevant to your records.
Give each exception a concrete question. “Check tax” is too broad to track. “Confirm the acquisition record used after this transfer” or “Confirm whether this announced dividend was actually paid” points to evidence someone can examine. Add the relevant date and document reference in your private working file.
Keep product behaviour and tax treatment in separate columns. One explains how the export currently displays the event. The other records the conclusion reached from the applicable rules and evidence. If either is unresolved, say so. This avoids treating a convenient reporting category as proof that an individual tax classification has been checked.
Understand why trade-wise and summary charges can differ
Zerodha’s download guide says trade-wise charges can differ from a segment’s summary where a trade was entered during the year but not exited in that year. Its separate Other credits and debits explanation distinguishes certain account-level entries from charges shown on contract notes. Read those labels before assuming two totals should be identical.
When reviewing a difference, first note the exact two totals and the sheets they came from. Check their period, segment and inclusion rules. Do not add a charge from a supporting statement to a report total without understanding whether it is already included. Equally, do not delete an unexplained difference merely to force agreement.
Keep a short reconciliation note that describes the basis of each amount. For example, one figure may concern the displayed realised-trade rows, while another is an account-level summary. Ask the platform to explain an unresolved presentation issue. Whether a particular expense is deductible is a separate tax question for the applicable circumstances.
Use AIS and other statements as cross-checks
The Income Tax Department’s AIS FAQ warns that AIS contains information presently available to the Department and may not display every transaction. It provides a feedback mechanism for reported information. An absent item therefore does not establish that there was no relevant activity, and a displayed figure still needs to be understood in context.
Compare like with like. A gross transaction amount, a reported information value, a holding balance and a profit calculation answer different questions. Read the amount description, the period and the source before looking for numerical agreement. Two different measures can be correct without being equal.
Our guide to annual tax statements and TDS credit covers the separate credit-reconciliation task. Use it for that question rather than assuming a tax P&L export replaces the statement or confirms every credit. Keep each document’s purpose visible in the file set you give an adviser.
If a reported item appears wrong, preserve the observation and use the appropriate official or provider process. Do not erase an actual transaction from your personal records simply because two systems disagree. The goal is to explain the discrepancy with evidence and follow the correct correction route.
Example: shares acquired before an account transfer
Consider a fictional investor who bought securities through one account, later transferred them into Zerodha and eventually sold some of them. The downloaded report alone does not explain the entire acquisition history. The investor first identifies the affected rows and retrieves the original purchase and transfer records.
They create a working note linking those records to the disposal, while leaving the original export untouched. They ask about any missing platform acquisition entry and give their adviser the evidence needed to consider the tax basis. They do not substitute a convenient market price or assume the report’s current display guarantees the final computation.
This example has no invented purchase figures or promised tax result. It illustrates a document gap that can be investigated systematically. The same discipline helps distinguish an incomplete input from a platform calculation issue and from a legal classification question requiring professional judgement.
Before you hand the report to an adviser
Prepare a concise cover note listing the account, exact reporting range, download date, supporting documents and unresolved exceptions. Mark which information came from the platform and which was added in a working copy. This lets another person reproduce the comparison without assuming your edits were part of the original report.
Share only through a suitable private channel. Transaction files can reveal identifiers, holdings and financial activity. The public comment section is not an appropriate place to seek review of a complete export. Check the recipient and agreed scope before transmitting the record.
Frequently asked questions
Does generating the report mean my return is ready?
No. The export supplies records for review. Coverage, missing inputs, exceptions and the applicable tax position still need attention.
Should I overwrite the downloaded spreadsheet?
Retain the original and work on a clearly identified copy. Record the reason and source for each adjustment so someone else can follow it.
Does this article announce a filing deadline or tax-rate change?
No. It covers report retrieval and verification. Check current official instructions for the actual return and period before acting on a deadline.
