Short answer: Use ECI electoral roll search to locate your own voter entry, then compare the record with your identifying details and available polling information. Start from the Election Commission of India’s official website and use its EPIC, details or mobile search option as appropriate. An unsuccessful lookup needs investigation; it is not, by itself, proof that an electoral authority has deleted your name.

This guide is for checking an existing record. It does not decide whether a person is legally entitled to vote, announce an election deadline or replace an Electoral Registration Officer’s decision. Looking up an entry, tracking an application and asking to change a record are separate tasks.
What ECI electoral roll search helps you check
ECI’s Electoral Roll page links to the official voter-search service and electoral-roll downloads. The useful starting question is specific: “Where is my entry, and do the identifying details match me?” That is more manageable than trying to solve every voter-document issue in a single search.
Before opening the service, decide whether you are checking a known entry, looking for the result of a recent application or trying to correct an error you have already identified. Keep those questions separate in your notes. Otherwise, a search result may be mistaken for an application acknowledgement, or a pending application may be treated as a completed change.
Have your own relevant record available privately. If you use an EPIC number, copy it from the document rather than recalling a few characters from memory. If the document is old, note that fact. It helps explain a difference without immediately assuming that either the current search or the old card is wrong.
Check early enough to investigate a mismatch through the responsible authority. This is a practical recommendation, not a claim that one national cut-off applies to every election. Read the current official notice for the election and area that actually concern you.
Select the route that matches the information you hold
On 19 October 2026, the live ECI electoral-search interface displayed three options: Search by EPIC, Search by Details and Search by Mobile. We inspected the public screens without entering a person’s data, completing a CAPTCHA or testing a private elector’s result.
The EPIC screen asks for the EPIC number and provides a state selector. The details screen presents fields such as name, relative’s name, birth information, gender and location. The mobile screen provides a mobile-number and OTP sequence. Follow the labels and mandatory fields on the live service rather than treating an older screenshot as a permanent form.
Choose one route deliberately. If you have the EPIC number, begin by checking that exact identifier. If you need the details route, prepare the details as they appear in the relevant record. A nickname used in everyday conversation may not match the recorded spelling you intend to find.
For mobile search, use the number relevant to your own record and keep control of the code. The presence of a working phone does not establish that its number is associated with the entry you seek. Do not use a helper’s OTP or another person’s identity details simply to get through the screen.
The service may offer language choices and location filters. Read the options actually available for the selected route. When changing language, check that you are still looking for the same person and location. Avoid changing several identifying details at once without keeping track of the question each attempt was meant to answer.
Identify the matching entry before using its information
A familiar name is a starting point for comparison, not a sufficient reason to select a result. Compare the combination of identifying information available on the record. Two people may share a name, and members of one family may have similar details. Do not select a convenient-looking entry merely because it appears first.
Read the location context carefully. Distinguish your remembered neighbourhood or old address from the area named in the current record. If the result provides constituency, part, serial or polling-station particulars, keep their labels intact when making your own note. Record only fields actually supplied; this guide does not promise an identical result layout for every case.
ECI’s Voters’ Services Portal overview describes polling-station and Booth Level Officer information among the available services. Use the information linked to the record and the current official election instructions. Do not assume that an old saved map, a relative’s polling place or a location mentioned in a social-media post answers your own current question.
Keep a short dated note of what you checked. A useful private note says which official service was used, which route you selected and what remained unclear. It need not reproduce every personal detail on the screen. Avoid turning a simple location check into an unnecessarily large collection of identity records.
| Observation | Next practical check |
|---|---|
| A result with a familiar name | Compare the other identifying and location details before relying on it. |
| An unfamiliar location | Check whether the record relates to an old address or a different person. |
| A recent application reference | Track the application separately and compare its actual outcome. |
| No result from one attempt | Review inputs and the official route before drawing a conclusion. |
Investigate an unsuccessful lookup in a clear order
First check what you entered. Compare each character in the EPIC number with the original, confirm the selected state and check for an accidental space. For details search, compare the recorded spelling and the information used for the relative or birth fields. The aim is accurate input, not guessing another person’s details.
Next distinguish “no matching result” from an incomplete or failed search. A validation message, an unavailable page and a completed search with no match describe different situations. Note the message actually displayed. Do not report a deletion when what you observed was a page error or a missing required field.
Use another official search route only when it fits the information you hold. For example, an accurate details search may help investigate an EPIC lookup that did not locate the expected record. Keep the attempts tied to the same person. Do not treat a similar name found through a different route as confirmation until its details have been compared.
If you still cannot reconcile the result, ask the responsible electoral authority for clarification. Explain the searches attempted, the relevant locality and any recent application reference you already hold. This article cannot infer the reason for absence, determine a deletion order or promise that a support enquiry will restore an entry.
Keep application tracking separate from roll lookup
The ECI service overview lists tracking of registration and correction applications as a separate facility. Its resident-elector FAQ also discusses communication of the Electoral Registration Officer’s inclusion decision and access to rolls through the state’s Chief Electoral Officer website. Read the actual application communication alongside the search record when investigating a recent change.
Use the reference issued for that application, rather than substituting an EPIC number into an unrelated status form. A record showing that an application was received does not answer every question about its final decision. Equally, a current lookup should be matched to the person and place involved in that application.
If you have moved and need to change the electoral address, our Form 8 address-change guide covers that different task. This article does not repeat its application and document instructions. Establish the actual record problem before deciding which official request is appropriate.
Do not submit several new applications simply because a search was inconclusive. Review any request already pending and ask what action is required. That gives the authority a clearer history and avoids creating uncertainty about which reference you want it to investigate.
Prepare a precise enquiry without exposing the whole record
Write the enquiry around one unresolved question. For example: “My EPIC lookup did not locate the entry I expected after this application; which record should I check?” Add the relevant application details through the official channel when requested. Avoid broad accusations unsupported by what the search actually showed.
Use contact information reached from ECI or the responsible state electoral authority. ECI’s website displays the voter helpline 1950. Confirm the appropriate local or official route for the enquiry rather than relying on a number supplied by an unknown caller. We do not promise that every enquiry can be resolved in one call.
If assisting a family member, keep them involved and explain why a particular field or code is being requested. Let them control their own authentication steps. Publicly accessible electoral information does not make it necessary to repost a full identity record, phone number or screenshot in a community group.
For broader guidance on handling official records, browse our government and public-service explainers. A clear record of the service, question and result is more useful than a folder of unlabelled screenshots collected from several unofficial sources.
Example: a search after moving home
Consider a fictional elector who recently submitted an address-change application. They have an older card and an application acknowledgement. They first track the application using its reference, then use the official electoral-search service to identify the entry they expect. They compare the person and location rather than relying only on a familiar name.
If the records do not agree, they retain the actual application communication and make a focused enquiry. They do not assume that changing Aadhaar, receiving a text message or possessing a plastic card independently settles the current electoral-roll question. The example illustrates record comparison, not a decision about eligibility or a guaranteed application result.
Frequently asked questions
Does one failed search prove my name was removed?
No. Check the inputs, distinguish an error from a completed search and seek official clarification if the expected record remains unlocated. Report what you observed rather than guessing the reason.
Can I use another person’s matching name?
No. Identify your own entry using the available combination of details. A shared name does not establish that a result belongs to you.
Does this guide announce a registration deadline?
No. Consult the official notice for the actual election and area. The guide explains a lookup process and does not calculate every elector’s application time limit.
Final ECI electoral roll search checklist
Start from ECI, select the right lookup route, compare the complete identifying context and record the available location details. Keep application tracking separate, investigate an inconclusive result accurately and use the official authority for unresolved questions. A careful check helps you understand your record without treating a search attempt as an electoral decision.
